Curcumin and knee stiffness
Previous studies have shown the effectiveness of curcumin in relieving joint stfiness. However, these studies show conflicting results because curcumin has poor oral absorption (Daily 2016). Indeed, the main limiting factor is the rapid glucuronidation/sulfation of curcumin (low bioavailability), which results in low curcumin activity.
A new clinical study demonstrates the effectiveness of Longvida® curcumin for knee relief.
In order to solve the problem of low curcumin absorption in the body, scientists at the University of Los Angeles (UCLA) have developed Longvida® curcumin.
Longvida® microencapsulation technology consists of encapsulating curcumin with stearic acid and sunflower lecithin. This innovative formula, therefore, increases the bioavailability of curcumin in its active form (free curcumin).
The objective of the study was to demonstrate the efficacy of Longvida® curcumin in reducing pain in patients with osteoarthritis of the knee (Gupte 2019).
Forty-two patients with osteoarthritis of the knee were randomized to receive either 400 mg twice daily of Curcumin Longvida® or 400 mg once daily of Ibuprofen for 90 days.
The main outcome evaluation criterion was pain reduction. The Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) was used on days 0, 30, 60 and 90.
The visual analogue scale (VAS) that measures pain perception was also recorded. During the study, inflammatory markers such as PGE2, TNF α, IL6, IL1β, LTB4, and the CTX II degenerative marker were analyzed.
The VAS and WOMAC scores decreased after 15 and 30 days, respectively.
No differences between the two patient groups (curcumin Longvida® or ibuprofen) were observed.
Thus, this result shows comparable efficacy in pain relief. In addition, none of the markers showed significant changes in either group (curcumin or ibuprofen).
This study shows that Longvida® curcumin was effective and safe in improving knee stiffness when given for 90 days.
