What is turmeric?

Turmeric also known as “golden spice turmeric” is a spice commonly used in South Asia, derived from the rhizomes of Curcuma longa L which belongs to the same botanical family as ginger.

The plant is grown in tropical climates and are characterised by their large ribbed leaves as depicted in the picture. The turmeric spice is used in traditional cuisine and medicine, and also as cosmetic and dyeing agent for clothes. Its bright yellow color comes from fat-soluble polyphenolic pigments, also known as curcuminoids.

Research studies demonstrated that curcumin, the main curcuminoid representing 2% to 5% of turmeric, is a potent anti-oxydant and anti-inflammatory. Learn more about Optim Curcuma
